Puff Gone Wrong

Happy Saturday! It’s been a long week but I am so happy that the weather is warming up and the snow is melting! Thank you Jesus because I HATE winter. Since it’s getting warmer and my braids are out, I decided to rock a puff this past Wed! I took my braids out last Thurs and washed my hair that same day. I will write a separate detailed post on my wash day routine and the specific products I used. Back to this puff! It was the worst puff ever. Afro puffs are my favorite hairstyle! I love them and they usually don’t fail me but this one was a mess.

Exhibit A– This hump in the back of my puff really irked me.

No matter how many bobby pins I stuck in the back of my hair, it just would not lay flat. I blame Zumba. The night before I went to two Zumba classes back to back, I sweated like crazy! During Zumba, my hair was in my everyday Celie Twists. After Zumba, my hair was wet with sweat and very FRIZZY! I unraveled the twists so that my hair could air-dry. After the sweat completely dried from my hair and right before my shower, I finger detangled my hair and put in big twists in order for it to stretch. After about a half an hour, I unraveled the twists and used a stocking to pull my hair up into a puff. I don’t usually do this after the gym but I really had my heart set on rocking a puff the next day because I knew the weather would be nice. My hair was so shrunken and matted after Zumba, I had to take these steps in order to even pull it up into a puff. THE STRUGGLE WAS REAL. Once I was FINALLY able to pull it up into a puff {with the back laying as flat as possible}, I combed {with a wide tooth comb} only the puff. I then put individual twists in my puff and put a scarf on, then my shower cap. After my shower, I felt the back of my hair had reverted and it was puffy. I went to bed with my hair still pulled up in the puff with the individual twists in it {a pineapple}. The next morning, I had this hump in the back of my hair. After I washed my hair last Thurs, I did not blow dry it. I don’t like blow drying my hair because it sweats out easily at the gym, in the shower, on a humid day, and while I am sleeping and etc. Also, when I blow dry my hair with the comb attachment, there is hair flying everywhere, its gross! I am going to try the tension method because I really like the results I see from other naturalistas that did it such as Klassy Kinks, Mahogany Curls and India of My Natural Sistas. Anyways, I let my hair air-dry last Thurs, as a result it can only get so stretched. Though, I’ve had some of my best puffs on air-dried hair {see below} so I’m not sure what’s going on.

After I took my braids out, I noticed my ends were raggedy.I think my last trim was in December. I am sure trimming my ends would help the appearance of my puff & bring it back to life. My puff was not full and fluffy. It got worst as the day progressed. It looked dry and stiff. These pictures were taking early in the morning when it looked decent but as the day continued, it didn’t look like this.

HOWEVER, I must say that I love my headband and earrings from Forever 21!!

Now it’s becoming warmer, I want to rock some more headbands!! The one I am wearing was about $4.80. I forgot how much the other one on the right was but I think it was $3.80, it was cheaper. You can view their headbands online here.

I LOVE Forever 21’s stud earrings!!!! The prices of my earrings below ranged from $2.80-$5.80.

These are some of my recent purchases from Forever 21. I have more studs I recently purchased from there but these are my favorites. I love stud flower earrings. You can view their studs online here.

Now I must say that even though Forever 21’s earrings are cheap, they’re good quality. I’ve had some of my studs and drop earrings that I purchased from there, for years!!! #Gogetyousome…lol just try not to drop them on hard floors {side eye.lol}

FYI: I have an accessories addiction! Scarves, bags, headbands, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, I am obsessed with them all. I’ll continue to share my finds and purchases on the blog 🙂 Accessories are my area of expertise, I have more accessories than clothes..lol #sadbutruestory

Anywho, I think I will do the tension method today {if I can get out this bed..lol} so I can rock a cute bun and headband this evening for Earth Matters, Fashion Matters. If I am too lazy, I will do Celie Twists but it would be nice to do something different. Plus its going be about 64 degrees today, that excites me!!!

How is your hair currently? Do you prefer your puffs on blow dried hair or air-dried hair? Please share with me in the comments below. Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!! 🙂

  1. I understand how you feel. That moment when you try to fix your hair and it starts acting like a child having a temper tantrum in the cereal aisle. Lol. Anywho, the puff actually looks good, but I can relate that you want what you want.

  2. Once upon a time in my life, blow-dried puffs were my go-to hairstyle. However it caused so much damage! Now I love air-dried puffs and I have a lot of curl definition 🙂
